How we verify
Podiatrist Index is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.
Sources
- NPPES NPI Registry (CMS) — The federal registry of National Provider Identifiers; the monthly bulk file and weekly updates are our main source.
- CMS Doctors and Clinicians (Provider Data Catalog) — Medicare-enrolled clinicians with their group practice, group size, Medicare assignment, telehealth indicator and graduation year.
- Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) license files — Daily public file of Texas podiatry licenses; we show a Texas license only when TDLR lists it as current.
- American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery — Certifying board for podiatric foot and ankle surgery.
- American Board of Podiatric Medicine — Certifying board for podiatric medicine and orthopedics.
We read the NPPES monthly bulk file, plus CMS's weekly updates, and keep active NPIs whose primary taxonomy is Podiatrist (213E00000X) or a podiatry subspecialty: Foot & Ankle Surgery (213ES0103X), Foot Surgery (213ES0131X), Primary Podiatric Medicine (213EP1101X), Sports Medicine (213ES0000X) and Public Medicine (213EP0504X), in the United States and its territories.
Records whose NPI was last updated before 2013 are left out as dormant (those providers have mostly retired or moved), unless CMS's current Doctors & Clinicians file lists the podiatrist, or a group with the same name at the same ZIP, as enrolled in Medicare. Organizations with the same name, address and ZIP are merged.
Medicare facts come from CMS's Doctors & Clinicians national file: podiatrists are matched exactly by NPI; organizations are matched to a CMS group with the same legal name at the same ZIP. Assignment means the podiatrist or group accepts the Medicare-approved amount as payment in full (CMS marks some as may accept). Telehealth means Medicare claims show telehealth services. A listing without Medicare facts is simply not matched; it does not mean the provider refuses Medicare.
Texas: when a podiatrist's NPI record lists a Texas license, we look it up in TDLR's daily public license file and show it only when the number, surname and first initial match and TDLR lists the license as current. No match does not mean a license problem: the number on the NPI record may be missing or formatted differently.
The specialty in NPPES is self-reported. We show it as Registered specialty and never as board certification. A license number on a record is what the provider entered. Other practice locations come from the NPPES monthly file. The wound-care group is based only on the words in a practice's registered name.
We do not publish ratings, reviews, prices or outcomes. Order within a city: practices first, then listings CMS shows as Medicare-enrolled, then the most recently updated NPI records, then alphabetical. This is not a ranking of quality. Featured listings appear in a separate, labelled box and never change that order.
What a badge means
NPI active: the federal NPPES registry lists an active NPI with Podiatrist (or a podiatry subspecialty) as the registered specialty. The specialty is self-reported, so this is not a license check or board certification. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.
Freshness
Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-16. CMS publishes the full NPPES file every month and weekly update files in between; we apply both every week, and re-read CMS's Doctors & Clinicians file and TDLR's Texas license file, so listings are at most about a week behind, and every page shows the date of the data.
